This intensive set of three short movements by the German composer Bertold Hummel is not well known in the United States but should be. Hummel was a great talent whose compositions gathered many prices during his lifetime, resulting to his selection to the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1982. Tubists performing this work will need to have good pitch accuracy with its wide leaps, as well as good flexibility. A well developed sens of style on these sometimes "tongue in cheek" bagatelles will be an invigorating challenge. The slow middle movement may be performed without a mute if necessary.
